Join your guide for an enlightening adventure into the past.
Hundreds of years of amazing history have been made in
and around this unique coastal refuge, once called the
finest natural harbor from Maine to Florida by famed
explorer Giovanni de Verrazanno.
Early explorers, rugged islanders, whalers, pirates,
military, and even scientists have lived, worked, and played
on this beautiful outer
banks island.
The Cape Lookout National Seashore is also home to the
venerable Cape Lookout Lighthouse, one of the few operating
lighthouses that is accessible to the public by boat only.
168 feet
tall, and a reputation to match, the Cape Lookout
Lighthouse stands as a beacon of warning that alerts
mariners to the dreaded shoals that have earned this coast
the feared moniker, the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
You'll experience the
Historic Village where rugged families formed a community
that lived on the Island for generations. And, one of
the first Coast Guard stations anywhere in the country is a
proud reminder of the many brave souls who risked their
lives to help endangered mariners who became victims of
these dangerous waters.
Despite the dedication of the lighthouse keepers and
Life Savers over the years, many a vessel has come to ruin
on these shores, and ghostly stories still abound that tell
the tale of the unfortunate souls who still walk among us.
After the tour. You’ll be able to spend as much time
as you like exploring the island and relaxing on the
beautiful beach before returning on the ferry. |
