Public Field Trips on the Rachel Carson Reserve
Event Dates: Jun. 22-30, Jul. 1-31, Aug. 1-31, 2010
Public field trips on the Rachel Carson component of the N.C. National Estuarine Research Reserve occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-10:30am during June, July and August.

All programs are open and free to the public but reservations are required as boat space is limited. Call (252) 838-0883 to make reservations or for more information.

The Reserve offers three types of field trips:
1. Nature hikes occur during low tides, when the most amount of land is exposed on the island. Be prepared to get your shoes wet and muddy. We require close-toed shoes because of the abundance of oysters on the island. You may also have the opportunity to swim on the nature hike, so dress accordingly.
2. Boardwalk trips occur at high tide, when the water is high enough in the estuary for our 24' skiff to easily navigate around the island to our boardwalk located on Carrot Island.
3. Circumnavigation cruise on our 24' skiff around the Reserve allows visitors a chance to view Middle Marsh after a brief stop at the boardwalk.

On all three trips, we encourage you to bring sunglasses, hats, binoculars, water and sunscreen.

Please call the NC Coastal Reserve for specific dates and times for the field trips, 252-838-0883 orlori.c.davis@ncdenr.gov. You may also visit the website, www.nccoastalreserve.net.

Beaufort Pyrate Invasion
Event Dates: Aug. 13-14, 2010
At the Beaufort Historic Site in the center of downtown, an authentic Pyrate Encampment is active on Friday evening and all day Saturday with real Brethren of the Sea and wenches of a fascinating variety. Dinner and grog is served here Friday night by ticket.

Saturday (August 8), beginning at 1:30 PM, the Beaufort Pyrate Invasion occurs!

It begins with the Pyrates Procession along the downtown waterfront to Pollock Street where, in 1747, the town militia met the long boat of Spanish pyrate invaders set on pillaging the town. At 1:30 PM, cannons will be firing on the town, muskets on land will be countering, and the melee will begin!

History records that nearly 100 local farmers and townsfolk joined the small band of militiamen in defense of the town. The result was victory over the invading pyrates! It is said that some of the pyrates were buried in the Old Burying Grounds where they remain today.

Following the Invasion, there will be a public trial and other occurrences appropriate to a Pyrate Invasion, exactly as it was in 1747. The day concludes with a celebration of the town's victory at the North Carolina Maritime Museum where everyone will celebrate like pyrates!

Plan now to summon your crew for the first full weekend of August in Beaufort. It's great excitement that is fun for everyone.

The Beaufort Pyrate Invasion is an event of the Beaufort Business Association. Tickets to food events will be available soon. For more information, call 252-728-3719 or 252-728-4611.
