Scenes from the Old Burying Ground

Every Spring, the azaleas bloom in the Old Burying Ground, and every year, it's spectacular

Several vines of wisteria can be also be found throughout the cemetery

The grave of Capt. Otway Burns, a local naval war hero of the War of 1812

This little girl was buried in a keg of rum

These grave markers made of cypress are hundreds of years old

This is called Resurrection Fern - it grows on many of the trees in the Old Burying Ground, the only place that it grows in town.  After a few dry and sunny days, it looks like this, but....

...after a day of rain, it looks like this - Resurrected from the dead

Since Beaufort could only be reached by boat until 1905, many families in the 18th and 19th century made long boat trips to come to church.  These kinds of families sometimes made grave markers like this table top grave for their loved ones.  After church, the family would use the grave to eat the lunch they had brought from home.

The middle marker was intentionally made to look broken, in order to symbolize a life cut short by death
